About This Project

March 2025 on a two-story in Sugar Land's Greatwood, 77479. The homeowner arranged everything up front and the crew built it in a single day.

The roofline is a cluster of hips with a front gable and a one-story wing worked in. Tear-off, synthetic underlayment, new boots and a gray laminate shingle with every hip capped.

Greatwood was built in the 1990s and the roofs are large. A two-story hip roof like this one has more linear feet of hip and ridge than a gable roof of the same square footage, and the cap is where wind damage starts, so each one was nailed to the high-wind pattern.

A one-day build on a two-story hip roof depends on the dump trailer being in the right place. On this house the only spot was the driveway, which meant the garage was blocked for the day. The homeowner moved the cars to the street the night before, which is the kind of small cooperation that makes a one-day roof possible.

Six photos show the hips and ridges from the roof.
