About This Project
December 2024, a one-story with a tall hip roof in Houston's 77041, west of Jersey Village. The homeowner had a solar-powered attic fan they wanted to keep, so the crew lifted it, laid new shingles and flashing under it and re-set it in the same spot.
The roof was torn to the deck and re-shingled in a charcoal laminate, with new boots on the pipe jacks and fresh flashing around the chimney chase. Metal work was limited to the roof itself on this one; the gutters stayed.
Solar attic fans are a good fit for a tall hip roof like this one because the attic volume is large and there is no ridge long enough for a continuous ridge vent. The fan pulls hot air out through the top while the soffit vents feed it from below, which keeps the deck cooler in August and the shingles aging slower.
The photos show the main hip, the chase and the rear slopes with the neighboring two-story behind.
