About This Project

January 2025 on a one-story in southwest Houston. The tear-off found three layers of shingles on one section and two on the rest, which is more roof than anyone expected and more than the deck should have been carrying.

Every layer came off to the wood. The extra labor and disposal went on a change order the homeowner approved on the spot, and the new roof is a single layer of driftwood laminate over clean decking.

Three layers is a sign a house has had owners who kept choosing the cheap option. The weight alone can sag rafters, and no shingle warranty covers an install over two existing layers.

Six photos show the finished roof and the decking during tear-off.
